Big, Expensive, but overall totally worth it! |
This camera was one of the most intelligent decisions we've ever made. I owned an older Nikon regular SLR camera, and discovered that I can use the same lenses with this new Digital SLR! how wonderful!
I took the camera with me on a trip to Thailand and took some amazing photos.
Travelling with a camera this large is VERY inconvenient. However for the quality of the photos that were taken I was fine with lugging around such a large piece of equipment. It did make me nervous however to be cruising up a river on a longtail boat with water flying around everywhere!! Fortunately (and I was not aware until later, Nikon does sell a casing that makes this digital camera waterproof!! how wonderful is that?!
After coming home, we printed out the photos using an online service and it is near impossible to tell that the photos were taken with a digital camera. We had a few blown up to frame and they look absolutely fantastic.
I am not a photographer, and I was able to take the best photos of my life using this camera!!!
Highly recommended! |

Yet another "just out of warrranty" issue. |
I am another of the apparently growing list of users who, shorly after the warranty expires, has their camera mysteriously die, where it just won't "boot up". Unfortunately I am now completely committed to Nikon because I went out and bought several thousand dollars of lenses and accessories, so to preserve this, I have to throw good money after bad. Even If I have to buy another D70 body, I will, if only to preserve all of that investment in lenses.
Sorry Nikon, but for this kind of money and given your supposed reputation, you don't *get* "permission" to have a reliability issue.
If you go to sporting events, all of the professional photographers have Canon. I should have realized when I started this process that this is not an accident... Unless you are committed to the Nikon brand because of accessory investment, go with Canon. |

From a 35mm Nikon User |
| Terrific camera. If you have used Nikon AF film cameras, the D70 is very easy to use (I can't speak from the perspective of non-Nikon users). The LCD layout is familiar, and after a quick review of the buttons you can control all the important stuff quickly. The pictures are just beautiful in RAW format (I bought Paint Shop Pro for the rebate, so I haven't used the bundled software). The JPEG-Fine images are excellent as well. The thing that will probably impress you most, if you've used any P&S digital - This camera is Big, and this camera is "light-speed" FAST. Focus with the included 18-70mm lens is extremely fast. I also bought a 50mm 1.8 lens, and that too is quick, seems as quick as an N90s. The on-camera flash is an on-camera flash, none of them great - red-eye city in normal flash mode. But the AF assist light is really good. Even in very dim lighting you will get a fast focus. The menus can be set to "simple" or "detailed". You must use the "detailed" mode to set certain features in the camera, but again, most of the important stuff is controlled by the buttons and command dials. The items in the menu will be familiar to Nikon users and easily manipulated. The user manual is really well done, so I suspect everyone would have an easy time with the menus. The weight is excellent. It is lighter than an N90s, and it is easier to grip because of its shape. Though kinda large, it is really well balanced. In the looks department, it IS a Nikon, so it is beautiful, even if it is plastic. Those guys know what a serious camera should look like, and the D70 is a serious camera. The kit price right now with the rebate (ends Aug. 1) can be as low as $850. If you've ever bought a good autofocus Nikon, you know just how good that price is. This is what you call "bang for the buck" in spades. |
